Signs of the Times Articles MP3
by Ellen G. White

Downloadable Text-to-Speech Audio Recordings

[From our early years] "The message from the Lord called for the church to herald the message to all the  world. James White believed this, and it led him to launch the Signs of the Times in the summer of 1874 as a religious newspaper published west of the Rocky Mountains. The Pacific Coast states in those days seemed far separated by plains and mountains from Battle Creek, Michigan, and the larger part of the continent. Communications were slowed by the long distances, and there seemed to be somewhat of an isolation not wholesome to the promising rapid development of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the West. As James White pondered, he was led to believe that a new journal published there would furnish a prompt and convenient medium of exchange and could also be a pioneer missionary paper. He was forthright in declaring his concept of the mission of the new journal. It was 'to be not only an expositor of the prophecies, a report of the signs of our times, but also a family, religious and general newspaper for the household.' . . .

"Reaching new believers in the West and pressed for constructive articles to fill the columns from week to week, the Signs from the very first carried one or two articles from the pen of Ellen G. White in each issue. . . . With the editorial policy aimed at providing a journal for missionary use, Ellen White prepared her articles with a definite evangelistic appeal. This meant that they dealt more with doctrine, practical Christian experience, temperance, Bible characters, etc., giving us rich and unique sources in these areas. . . .

"Many sermons were reported which present practical counsel as she set it before audiences fron the public platform on three continents. There are many articles largely in the form of doctrinal expositions. The biographical articles are of interest, for often in connection with her travels she furnished the readers of the Signs with travel reports. The glimpses they give of the developing work of the church make a contribution to a knowledge of denominational history. There are articles filled with practical, vital instruction and words of encouragement. Some of the articles consist of messages of admonition and counsel as pertinent today as when they were first written and published." Trustees of the Ellen G. White Estate, March 12, 1974.

1,528 of Ellen G. White's articles, of the some 2000 published in the periodical Signs of the Times from 1874 through 1915, are available in MP3 form for download below. Several hundred of Ellen White’s articles in the Signs of the Times were first published in the Review and Herald or in the Testimonies for the Church. Such articles are not duplicated or included in this collection of MP3 recordings but are found in the MP3 collections on this website of those other mentioned publications. Also, a number of articles were published more than once in the Signs of the Times. The MP3 recordings of such articles are included here only for the date of there first publication. All of Ellen White's Signs of the Times articles thus are included in the various MP3 collections of this website. The articles have each been recorded into their individual MP3 audio file and numbered sequentially in the order of their publishing date. The recordings were made at 32kbps. There are ten recordings per folder and most folders are 20 – 40 MB in size.

Text-to-Speech technology has progressed tremendously over the last decade. Most individuals will be amazed at how well an electronic reader can communicate verbally. Many hours have been spent “educating” the speech engine used in these recordings to pronounce properly these spiritual messages. Unfortunately, there are a number of words in the English language, which are spelled the same but are pronounced differently and have a different meaning when in a different setting or tense. For example: “I will read the article” and “I have read the article.” Another example: “I live in Boston” and “There are live tigers at the zoo.” It has not been possible to educate the speech engine in these type of instances. But in spite of some drawbacks, the Text-to-Speech technology allows us to provide audio recordings of large numbers of inspired writings in a very profitable listening form and convenient manner.
