Bible Readings for the Home Circle had its beginnings back in the 1880s as a monthly, subscription magazine called Bible-Reading Gazette. The twelve issues of 1884 contained 162 lessons written by many ministers and lay evangelistic workers on a wide range of scriptural topics covering the cardinal teachings of the Bible. Extra copies were later bound in book form and sold door-to-door with great acceptance by the general public. This bound volume of Bible studies later received its present name and by the 1914 date of this reproduced edition it had expanded to 790 pages, with 200 readings of nearly 4,000 questions and scriptural answers, interlaced with nearly 300 special illustrations, some 20 charts, and over 100 poems. This volume has proved a real blessing to countless millions of readers.

The Ministry of Healing, Heritage Edition

The Ministry of Healing was first published in its present form in 1905. Its roots, however, began  as far back as the 1860s with materials Ellen White wrote for publications such as Health Reformer, Good Health, Appeal to Mothers, How to Live, and Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene. This Heritage edition has some 270 illustrations from a century ago.

Christ spent more time healing and ministering to the physical needs of suffering humanity than he did to preaching. He related to people in the areas of their felt need and after gaining their attention and indebtedness he ministered to their spiritual needs, encouraging them to “go and sin no more.” He was indeed the pattern Medical Missionary. Through His example in ministry He calls not only health professionals but every admirer of His to “come and follow Me.” 

The Ministry of Healing helps us to see the natural laws of our bodies as the divine laws of a loving Creator. Its practical counsel guides us in our day-to-day care of our physical being in ways that will greatly maintain physical health and, in general, provide us a longer, more productive, and enjoyable life span.

There is also much information on how to best minister to those who are suffering physically, mentally, and spiritually. There is good, practical advice on how to provide effective home health care which, in many instances, will diminish, the need for professional health care and fewer medications.

Christ's Object Lessons, Heritage Edition

Christ the Great Teacher gave much of His instruction as He walked with His disciples through the hills and valleys of Palestine or rested by the lake or river. In His parable teaching He linked divine truth with common things and incidents, as may be found in the experiences of the shepherd, the builder, the tiller of the soil, the traveler, and the homemaker. Familiar objects were associated with thoughts true and beautiful—thoughts of God’s loving interest in us, of the grateful homage that is His due, and of the care we should have one for another. Thus lessons of divine wisdom and practical truth were made forcible and impressive.

      The Scripture says, “All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; . . . that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.” Matt. 13:34, 35. Natural things were the medium for the spiritual; the things of nature and the life-experience of His hearers were connected with the truths of the written word. Leading thus from the natural to the spiritual kingdom, Christ’s parables are links in the chain of truth that unites man with God, and earth with heaven.
